A Closer look at the President

Oh dear. Things go from bad to worse for our President. The women in his life (Mme Royale, partner of 23 yrs and father of his children and Valerie ‘the Rottweiler’ Trierweiler) had a high profile Twitter spat early in his presidency and have caused him no end of bother. Now we learn that he has been dashing across Paris in the dead of night on the back of a scooter to spend the night with an actress nearly 20 years his junior. And the poor Rottweiler has been admitted to hospital with a sever case of the blues!

It wouldn’t be so bad if he was doing a good job, but M. Hollande has the lowest ratings of any president in history and frankly seems clueless to offer any convincing solutions to the country’s malaise. If he was on top of his job I might have some sympathy with his claim that his private life is his business and not that of ‘Closer’ magazine; if he was the head of state of a different country I think the people would be somewhat less tolerant of his extra-curricular activities than the French seem to be. There is of course a bit of previous when it comes to presidential flings. Mitterrand famously had a secret love child;  Valérie Giscard d’Estaing had a car crash at dawn with a milk float while returning from a night with a lover (his approval ratings subsequently went up) and Chirac was privately dubbed “five minutes, including shower”. The press today indicates that 3/4 of French feel Hollande is right and what he does in his private life is up to him. Surely if you are elected President of France there is an obligation to focus 100% in the job in hand, especially when things are going so badly, in which case expending huge amounts time and energy on ‘non-core activites’ seems to me to become a matter of public interest? Or maybe this is a last ditch effort from the bespectacled one to win the affections of  the nation ….

  1. This is just such good gossip fodder. I’m a bit surprised by Valérie taking off in high dudgeon and installing herself in hospital for the duration. I thought she had a bit more backbone, but I suppose she has demonstrated in the past that she likes a bit of melodrama. The knives will really be out now for Hollande, not so much because he’s had an affair, but because of the connections that the affair suggests. One can only sit back open mouthed at the folly of it all.

  2. Looking forward to the next installment! Wonder if Valerie was watching the presidential address from her hospital bed?!
