New Year surprise

First of all, a very Happy New Year to all our blog followers and readers and we wish you health and happiness in 2014.

We’ve just returned from a couple of weeks in Blighty celebrating Christmas and New Year. It is always a bit of a worry going away as we have several animals we have to leave behind. The chickens (including the now vocal Jonathan) go ‘en pension’ in the village with some friends. Dennis has a super duper food dispenser with a recorded message of yours truly shouting ‘Dennis…teatime, Dennis…teatime’ at the allotted hour, plus all the mice and birds he cares to slaughter. And our neighbours, Steve, Sara and Sophie, fulfill the role of shepherds, tending the sheep and Moins Dix. This year they have been called into action a bit more than in previous years as on Thursday Clover, one of our ewes, decided to give birth to a couple of lambs. Last year lambing took place at the end of March/early April, so it came as quite a shock! Sadly one little one didn’t make it, but the remaining lamb, Basile, is a very sturdy little chap indeed…

Here he is with mum (he’s 5 days old). Luckily he is much better looking than last year’s lamb, Donkey, and is already springing around the field. His Auntie Rosemary should be following suit shortly, so he hopefully will have a little friend or two in the coming days. A big thank you to our holiday shepherds for all their help bringing Basile into the world !
