Sexing chickens…

We are wondering if our Joan is turning into Jonathan…

She/he was born at the beginning of August with her sister Beryl. Now Beryl is definitely a girl and we were pretty convinced Joan was too. We didn’t bother sexing them…it all seems a bit tricky and frankly unnecessary. This is what I found on wikipedia: ‘Vent sexing, also known simply as venting, involves squeezing the feces out of the chick, which opens up the chick’s anal vent slightly, allowing the chicken sexer to see if the chick has a small “bump”, which would indicate that the chick is a male. Some females also have bumps, though they are rarely as large as those of male chicks‘. Hmm, think  we’ll give that a miss!Anyway, I have always felt Joan was a bit odd – her tail often flopped and her back feathers were a bit strange. Then this week there have been some very strange noises emanating from the chicken house and Joan’s plumage has changed. Also, I’ve noticed her/him stretching out her/his neck as if to crow.

Pity really. We keep our ‘girls’ for eggs and I’m afraid boys are just too noisy, particularly when our gite guests are here. If he is a cock, we suspect he is a bantam cock…so sadly we will only need a small pot!

  1. Oops!
Maybe your Joan would make a tasty coq au vin!

    • It is starting to look very much that way! Might try and fatten her/him up a bit first!

  2. Looks like a red sex-link cockerel to me. The females are mainly reddish with white underneath.
