Sweetcorn smut and a bit on the side.

The sweetcorn has done well this year, despite the seed looking a bit old. But one cob has grown this strange lesion which is daily enlarging. After some research it turns out to be a fungal disease called “Sweetcorn smut”.  Originally found in the Americas, it was well known by the Incas, and is still prized by the Mexicans as a culinary delicacy, usually fried and served with peppers.  I think I will give that one a miss.

In the orchard Kath insists on strimming the margins of the lawn up against the walls. This year I have managed to persuade her that at least one border could be left from mutilation. The result is a lovely mixture of plants that the insects and animals love. I never thought she would let me have a bit on the side!
