The last supper…

It’s that time of year again – time for the lambs to enjoy their last day of freedom. Here they were yesterday afternoon having a last graze around the oak tree…

As you will see, they did not succumb to acorn poisoning as we feared they might! Last year a friend came round to do the slaughtering and butchering, but we’ve since converted the slaughter house into a gite, so we thought it best to do the proper thing and send them off to the abattoir this year. Roger had built a special pen to catch them in and had been feeding them there all week, getting them used to it. When the moment came, the 3 lambs obliged, but old wise Minty was having nothing of it! Luckily, Roger had built a back up pen to cater for such eventualities, so by the time the sheep man arrived this morning they were all ready, bags packed, to leave.

I don’t have any qualms about the lambs, because we never named them and they all looked the same. But we’ve been through a lot with our Minters and I did sense there was a little tear welling in her eye as the van rolled down the road. Let’s hope she is tasty!

At least they had a good day for it – beautifully warm and sunny. It is perfect for grass growing, and indeed our new lawns are coming on a treat…

The countryside looks a picture too, a real treat of autumn colours. Here is our Virginia Creeper giving a stunning display on the side of the house…
