Days off.

We have been working hard over the past weeks and deserved a few days off. Luckily some chums arrived and we had an excuse-although they all did their bit to help.

We’ve done lots of cycling, with today being the cycling club picnic. Miles away, 8am start, and 90 kilometres before lunch. But what a typically French lunch! The aperitives were served with enough nibbles to feed an army, and then we had to sit down to the proper eating! We made the typical British error of only bringing some red wine. I was informed that we had to have rose with the starters, our Chinon red with the first meat course, some St Emillion with the beef, and then another Bordeaux red with the cheese. Kath was driving! We did finish early though, about 4.30ish. There are some lovely parts of France locally which seem to be far off the normal tourist route, and even today, in the busy holiday season, there were not many people at the country park we used.

Talking of the French, I have realised that they use their ladders the opposite way round to us. I don’t mean they go up when we go down, but they always lean the narrow section against the wall when we Brits all lean the fat part. What can that signify? I know it’s true because our builders would always turn my ladder around after I had used it-.

Butterflies again. Here is one of our local Swallowtails on the buddlia; we have the Scarce Swallowtail shown here and also the standard one which won’t sit still long enough for me to take a photo!

Hols over, work again tomorrow. Thank goodness I am retired!
