A dog amongst the chickens.

We have a lovely dog. A terrier. One of the largest breeds of terrier, an Airdale. They are known for their bravery and resilience, and were used in the Great War as messenger dogs in the trenches.

We have a duffer! She is the softest lump of canine I have ever known. Sundays are out of the question for walks because of the nasty sound of guns, and fireworks are the stuff of nightmares. Any sign of thunder and she is up under our bed-she would, I am sure, be in bed with us if she were allowed. That is not to say, however, that she lacks a voice. Au contraire, the nice post lady has a never ending barrage of barking when she arrives, and her van is chased enthusiastically to the end of the orchard when she departs. We even have skid marks on the lawn where she puts the brakes on-the dog that is, not the post lady!

We have recently removed the fence around the chickens so that they can free range in the orchard and our courtyard. There was some concern that the fearless terrier would devour all four as an amuse bouche. No need to worry! We think she sees them as some sort of farmyard monster to be avoided at all costs, especially when they run towards her to pick up some bread I have thrown. Here she is, bemused and confused by her feathered companions!
