Double-yolkers

There is definitely a feeling of spring in the air (let’s hope I am not speaking too soon again). Actually it is only a few days ago that it was minus 4, but up to plus 10 this afternoon and quite pleasant. The chickens are obviously finding it pleasant too as that are laying at a fine rate. Also, we are still getting double yolkers at regular intervals. Here are a couple we had this morning alongside a normal sized egg:

apparently double yolkers come largely from young chickens who have just started laying and haven’t quite got their yolk and white synchronisation sorted out. So, it is obviously our Maran who is in her first season of lay. And double yolkers are not as rare as I had thought – seemingly 1 in 1000 is a double yolker. Amazing that this is the first we have ever had!

We are advancing with the planning stage of our gites. We had a visit from the mason, plumber, electrician and roofer yesterday to see the project in order for them to draw up their quotes. Let’s see what they come up with…
