Chickens live to see another day!

Today was supposed to be D-day for 2 of our chickens. Bought at the end of July at a local market we have been fattening them up ready for the freezer. We’d psyched ourselves up to do the deed this evening, but, alas, we were invited out for aperatifs with some friends instead! Here are the tasty things in the orchard this afternoon under the walnut tree unaware of their impending fate:

The 2 on the right are called ‘cou nu’ and are a breed we were not familiar with before we arrived in France. The look particularly ugly, but I guess how they look is not the most important thing when it comes to eating chickens! In addition we have 3 guinea fowl which over the past two or three weeks have started to find their voices; what a racket they make!!

So, we’ll pluck up courage for another attempt on Friday….
